Alice in Chains is an American rock band formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1987 by Jerry Cantrell and original lead vocalist Layne Staley. The initial lineup was rounded out by drummer Sean Kinney, and bassist Mike Starr (who was replaced in 1993 by Mike Inez).

Although widely associated with grunge music, the band's sound incorporates heavy metal and acoustic elements. Since its formation, Alice in Chains has released four studio albums, three EPs, two live albums, four compilations, and two DVDs. The band is known for its distinct vocal style which often included the harmonized vocals of Staley and Cantrell.

Alice in Chains rose to international fame as part of the grunge movement of the early 1990s, along with other Seattle bands such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden. The band was one of the most successful music acts of the 1990s, selling over 35 million albums worldwide, and over 14 million in the US alone. In 1992 the band released their album Dirt which was critically acclaimed and has been certified quadruple platinum. The band also achieved two No.1 Billboard 200 albums (Jar of Flies and Alice in Chains), 14 top ten songs on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, and eight Grammy Award nominations.

Although never officially disbanding, Alice in Chains was plagued by extended inactivity from 1996 onwards due to substance abuse, which resulted in in the 2002 death of Layne Staley, and the 2011 death of former bassist Mike Starr (who left the band in 1993). The band reunited in 2005 with new lead vocalist William DuVall and released Black Gives Way to Blue, their first studio album in 14 years, on September 29, 2009. The album was a success, being certified gold by the RIAA in March 2010. Alice in Chains is currently working on a new album, which is rumored for release in early 2012.

"Rooster" is a grunge song by the band Alice in Chains. The song was released as a single in 1993 and is featured on the band's second studio album, Dirt (1992). The song was included on the compilation albums Unplugged (1996), Music Bank (1999), Greatest Hits (2001), and The Essential Alice in Chains (2006). A demo version of the song was also included on Music Bank. (Wikipedia, October 2011)

  • @duilkin

Alice in Chains seem to have a very loyal following. While they were very big in the early nineties, I only really discovered them a few years ago. As always, thanks very much for your support Mike - Ron

  • @iamRottenRon I went active like him with EMG PJX and love it. Check them out. Wood is my fav next to Angry Chair. Nice vid bro. These young kids missed out. I remember going to the 2nd Lalapalooza with them in Cleveland at Blossom and never looked back as a fan. I hate Jerry's vocals and miss Lane! RIP.

Thanks for the info dude. I just started playing again recently and I've never tried active pickups - need to do so. I'm also a recent convert to AiC so I'm not that familiar with their catalog. I'll definitely check out Wood and Angry Chair. Thanks again for viewing and the comments - Ron

  • Great Cover! It's helping me to learn this awesome song, thank you! :D

  • @iamRottenRon Sorry the song is Would? not Wood (typo). And good luck!

  • @iamRottenRon I remember buying this CD new that I still have. They even had a cool video back when MTV had those. I think the PJ pu tone & configuration of your bass is similar to Mikes. He still has his Wawrick Streamer from this recording in his collection. I am thinking of buying one someday but prefer Fenders still.

  • @iamRottenRon It was my pleasure you are doing a fantastic job. cheers

  • @iamRottenRon Nice. Can't wait to hear it.
