Home-made Thermate Grenade Using:

70% Thermite
27% Barium Nitrate
2% Sulfur
1% Dextrin

(This is not the perfect mixture because it is not good to use dextrin, one time the water used started a chain reaction from the aluminum reacting with the nitrate. It gave off a lot of nasty fumes and heated the container to about 150 degrees celsius. My current mixture uses TH-3 with PBAN resin with boric acid to neutralize the spontaneous reaction. I'll upload a way better thermite video after the 4th. This was my first thermate test so it wasn't that great.)

  • Should have had an explosive charge in the middle for a larger blast radius but then again, would the explosion create a spark or do other materials have to be added?

  • @ediblemangopants Funny that you asked, my friend had one of my newest generations of thermate grenades that he left in a place easily found by the police (idiot). This being post 9/11 they assumed it was a bomb and called the bomb squad which tried to detonate it on location with a small HE charge. It ended up just throwing "red powder" everywhere with no ignition. I'm pretty sure it was the new plasticizer I used that made it so stable. my other thermate video is of one similar.

  • Where do you get the PBAN?

  • @AirrowRocket Usually I dont give sources, but that stuff is hard to find.

    Google:

  • I'll upload a much better quality and detailed instructional video in a few days.

  • This was an INCENDIARY GRENADE. ITS NOT SUPPOSED TO EXPLODE. Its ment to make molten metal hence "Thermate"

  • haha its a firecracker

  • much more effective as a smoke grenade

  • @badmf13 Interesting story, but I am asking about whether an explosive such as Black powder, TNT or even Semtex in the center would enhance the capabilities of the grenade in which ether it would increase the blast radius as well as cover a large area with flames or it would it negate the effect causing an ignition failure and just have a small explosion.

  • "DAGIT! It didn't work! well I'll just walk up to it and see... HOLY CRAP MY FACE!!!!!!

  • Incendiary AND smoke grenade. 2 for the price of 1!

  • Why is thermate better than thermite? Does it burn hotter?

Is it enough better to justify the extra time spent gathering the ingredients to make thermate instead of a trip down to the local hardware/paint store to get stuff for thermite? Or did you make it just for the experience?

  • @madv14 actually thermate is a different substance than thermate. Thermate has a percentage of barium nitrate along with a little bit of sulfur mixed with the regular thermite. Thermite is not the same as Thermate.

  • Nice work on the pull ignition. Camera was a little shaky but otherwise it was all right.
