Bankshoot in North Hollywood (L.A 28.02.1997) Part 2

The North Hollywood shootout was an armed confrontation between two heavily-armed and armored bank robbers, Larry Eugene Phillips, Jr. and Emil Matasareanu, and patrol and SWAT officers of the Los Angeles Police Department in North Hollywood, Los Angeles, California on February 28, 1997. It happened when responding patrol officers engaged Phillips and Matasareanu leaving the robbed bank. Seventeen officers and civilians sustained injuries before both robbers were killed. Phillips and Matasareanu had robbed several banks prior to their attempt in North Hollywood and were notorious for their heavy armament, which included automatic rifles.

United States patrol officers at the time were typically armed with a 9mm or .40 caliber pistol on their person, with a 12-gauge shotgun available in their cars. Phillips and Matasareanu carried fully automatic rifles and wore body armor. Since most handgun calibers cannot penetrate body armor, patrol officers had a significant disadvantage until SWAT arrived with equivalent firepower; they also appropriated several semi-automatic rifles from a nearby firearms dealer to help even the odds. The incident sparked debate on the appropriate firepower for patrol officers to have available in similar situations in the future.

@lesterdiamond5 the assailants happened to be on phenobarbital and nerve relaxant and they were wearing aramid body armor. the standard .38 and 9mm couldn't penetrate that.

i was surprised nobody got a headshot but when two guys with full auto guns are shooting at you i guess theres no time to really aim, just pray and shoot in the direction

Prior to this incident, The L.A.P.D didn't carry assault rifles..I'm guessing because most of their officer involved shootings involved Unarmed men, So the gauge and the pistol were MORE than enough.

lets put this into a childs perspective. lets pretend the average officer, the first responders, who didnt have head to toe armor on, or carrying a rifle (regular cops, not swat, chest guard and pistol only for most part) werent carrying pistols and shotguns. Lets say they were carrying slingshots & blow guns =)

How many would you say it would take to stop these guys? cause with head to toe armor and fully automatic rifles with AP ammo, they cops may as well have HAD SLINGSHOTS! the ak will own

people say really dumb things. yes i think there were 300 cops there. Until SWAT showed up not one of the 300 police had anything other than handguns and shotguns. 300 People, police, delta force, spartans, whatever, armed with pistols and a few shotguns. canteven get within striking range of those 2. With the body armor they had forget penetration, nothing less than point blank range would even make a bad bruise. AK's will turn a squad car and all inside into slurry at 400 yards until ammo out
