@MuziekFan1995 I think it's like a motivation to get something done. Emmetts chip on his shoulder is buying the house for his mom, and that's how he got through law school. That's his motivation- or his chip- his mom.

@MuziekFan1995 it means that the person with a "chip on their shoulder" (you in this case) is looking for any excuse to engage in conflict, often overreacting to the smallest thing. ;)
