The song was written by Don Raye in 1940, loooong before Amos Milburns version. Don Raye was the same guy who wrote Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy from Company B, and also wrote Beat Me Daddy 8 To The Bar. He wrote "Down The Road A Piece" for the Will Bradley Orchestra, and Freddy Slack was the pianist. The lyrics "The drummer man's a guy they call 8 Beat Mack" are about Ray McKinley who was Will Bradley's drummer and called 8 beat Mack
