"The Little Drummer Boy," originally known as "Carol of the Drum," is a popular Christmas song written by the American classical music composer/teacher Katherine K. Davis in 1941. It was recorded 1955 by the Trapp Family Singers and further popularized by a 1958 recording by the Harry Simeone Chorale. This version was re-released successfully for several years and the song has been recorded many times since. In the lyrics the singer relates how, as a poor young boy, he was summoned by the Magi to the nativity where, without a gift for the infant Jesus, he played his drum with the Virgin Mary's approval, remembering "I played my best for him" and "He smiled at me".

I'm glad they left that deep breath in the song, makes it more authentic, gives it a human touch. When I was a kid, 40+ years ago --never thought I'd hear myself say that!-- when the choir sings: "Ba-by Jesu", as a kid, I thought they were saying, "Hazel". Always wondered who "Hazel" was? Yes, there will never, ever be a better version of this song. Eat your heart out Justine Babette.

A Christmas classic that's gets played every holiday season! It never gets old!!! I remember first hearing "The Little Drummer Boy" back in 2nd grade. That's a long time ago!

That deep breath at 2:44 gave me goosebumps the first time I heard it on CD. Couldn't hear that on the album. Without a doubt, the greatest performance of this song ever recorded...
