Just good ole boys enjoying some good ole rock 'n roll. The secret to their success? They enjoyed making music. It may not be sexy, but then it is "hip to be square!!!!" Their performances were terrific. Saw him at Notre Dame with surprise guest John Fogerty!!!! the Encore was a 30 mintue jam session. Utterly fantastic. Still the only concert I've been to and didn't come away feeling ripped off.
Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercial and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far much more bitter, cynical sense of humour.
I think you are looking too much into this. What exactly is the subliminal message then in this song, and what is its purpose. You mention what you call symbolism (what everyone else calls a conspiracy theory) but do not mention what that would do. Just because someone moves into the spotlight does not mean they are trying to trick us or something like that.
