Tips keep the restaurant from losing money when business is slow by essentially having the customers pay the servers. They'd have to charge more to compensate for server pay if tipping weren't customary.

live in a small town and work at a small town restaurant, then watch this. i think if everyone would work as a waitress for at least a month and live off of their income then i think everyone would leave at least 15%. AT LEAST.

The movie is not current with todays standards. Servers don't make minimum wage anymore. In TX, i make 2.13 an hour which is primarily for SS, FED withholding, and Medicaid. I never get a check. You must realize something. U.S. establishments have figured out they can get away with not paying their employees a salary BECAUSE of the tipping system. Originally serving was a salaried profession and is still so in Europe. YOU the customer supply the income for servers. It's just how it is now.

Except for the fact that your employer is mandated by law to supplement your income to at least minimum wage.
