I've never understood why accent is so important. If it's meant to be authentic, then actors should speak Russian. If the film is in English, then what's wrong with an English accent?

The thing is that the Russian nobility and rich people very rarely spoke Russian, instead most of them preferred to communicate with each other in French, English or German. Russian was seen as the language of the commoners until the fall of the Russian Empire. Even the last Tsar, Nicholas II, wrote most of his memoirs in English.

I'm not usually a fan of these types of movies, but it actually looks pretty awesome.

very beautiful movie, it resembles Jane Eyre. The way it was directed, the music, a lot.

It's quite simple. Tolstoi, as all artists, tries to get you to experience a sector of society that is of privilege--along with the other sectors of society... Tolstoi is that good, he wouldn't leave out the telling of the life of the government clerks class, the proletariat, the peasants, etc. Now, how do you convey in a film the experience of upper class life TODAY to the average working stiff all over the world? SIMPLE: you use POSH English accent---it indicates "PRIVILEGED class of people".
