Raif Jarrett is a man who was born at the end of the 18th century. You might think that this is a very long time ago and not a word you'd recognise. But in fact, his world has many parallels with ours. This is a world which is full of change. The Industrial Revolution is expanding cities, making some people very rich, and others are losing their place and their jobs and the sense of who they are.

Raif is a man who has spent his life fighting abroad for King and country, just as many soldiers fight abroad for their countries today. But when he comes home, he finds a world he doesn't recognise, and a world which doesn't recognise him.

Raif, at the age of 30, finds himself in 1811 sent up north to sort out the affairs of a patron. Raif has been born a gentleman and brought up in the bosom of an aristocratic family, but his birth is hazy, so among strangers, no-one knows how to place him. This capable man of action finds himself up north in a small provincial town, where everyone knows one another and strangers are regarded with suspicion. The Duke's Agent has died, and he must pick up the affairs.

But he finds that not only are the account books missing, but someone has been murdered.

This is the world of F R Jarrett.
