Saul Bellow, a great writer.

Hitch (being particularly repulsive here) imbues Bellow's banal prose with just the right pantomime-toff vocal magic (catnip for middlebrow Murkkans) to make it sound like Writing. Beyond that, not much to this excerpt but the neo-con paranoia and schwarze-hating that put Bellow on the top of the jingoistic heap of the Yankee literary game at the height of the Cold War. Only fan base more gullible and/or uglier belongs to that tin-eared huckster Ayn Rand. Yuck.

@TheFallibleFiend Yeah it's one of my favourites along with "Herzog" and "The Dean's December" (that one is very underated).

I'm an atheist. Hitchens is indeed more Decent than Pat Robertson.

is there any footage of Hitchens reading from "Unackowledged Legislation" on Book TV. i was looking for that...

Hitch is more talented and decent than Pat Robertson. Go suck a priest's dick, you Jesus freak prick!
"Mr Sammler's Planet" is an exceptional book. The line "Who made shit a sacrament?" is among my favorite literary quotes.
