This footage shows Green Mountain Railroad RS-1 #405 pulling the Green Mountain Flyer tourist train from Bellows Falls, Vermont to Chester. This locomotive spent its entire operational life on this Vermont rail line first as Rutland #405 in the 1950s into the early 1960s until a strike shut down the Rutland Railroad. Today, control of the Green Mountain Railroad Corporation (GMRC) has been assumed by the Vermont Rail System (VRS), which puts all remaining former Rutland Railroad trackage under the control of a single corporation. GMRC still retains its separate identity with its green and yellow corporate colors.

  • I"m a RUTLAND fan......what a vintage piece of equipment, an original RUTLAND RS-1, i actually got shots of it in the Rutland Yard, from the hwy bridge back in 1986. I hope they can keep 405 running forever. It keeps the Rutland alive in a way you know. Is it the last original piece of Rutland equipment in service....

love the immortal pine green and yellow scheme!

  • @mikebarnes5194 Yes, you are absolutely correct! On the Green Mountain tours the conductor said this is the only loco on their roster that spent its entire life on the Rutland line AND it retained the same road number. The 405 received another green and yellow paint job recently and it looks fantastic! I believe the GMRC realizes what a historical gem they have in this loco so, hopefully, they will continue to preserve it for a very long time to come.

  • Does the Green Mountain Railroad own any GP9's i swear i saw some about 20 years ago in Palmer MA

  • @Tcostello105 The Green Mountain RR owned four GP9s at one point. Now I believe they're down to two - #803 and #804.

  • does this railroad pull freight? since i noticed the cars in the corner of the lens in the beginning and was wondering if that belonged to another railroad or green mountain?

  • @NARSConductor Yes, the Green Mountain handles freight as well as tourist trains.

  • The colour scheme is very similar to the one RENFE used to use in Spain.

The shade of green looks almost identical.

  • Don't know for sure, their site is not yet updated with the new schedules, so you'll have to wait and see.

  • Thank God 405 is still running and they're still running some excursions. Will the Bellows Fals-Chester trips ever return do you know?

  • Thanks for the info! Hopefully, they will post something soon about this on their website. I'm planning a Vermont vacation this summer and would like to take a rail excursion on this RR again.
