The video starts slowly, but don't look away! We wanted to install a whole house fan, but didn't want to see the huge vent that is required, during all the months it's not working.

We built an insulated partition wall across the attic, a couple of feet back from the gable wall, with the big fan in its center. We hinged three strips of the plywood sheathing to the studs, and remounted the siding to it, all carefully aligned. There is a counterweight on each strip, with a linkage that ties them together, making an openable louver. An electric actuator opens them when the fan comes on, and closes them when it goes off.

The fan is isolated from the building frame to keep it quiet, and you can hardly hear it in most of the house. A screen panel swings over it for safety, and an insulated door swings in from the other side to seal it up for winter. Works well!
