The first HandsOn Schools Volunteer Renovation Project in Downtown Buffalo began at 9am on Wednesday, June 10 with Hands On Greater Buffalo community volunteers, Home Depot volunteers, WNY AmeriCorps members, and students gathering together in front of Buffalo City Hall in Niagara Square to kick-off a day of volunteer service renovating a downtown school.
The renovations ran from 9:30am- 4pm at the Buffalo Academy of Science Charter School, 190 Franklin St. Buffalo NY at the corner of Huron, and included building two outdoor classrooms complete with benches and chalkboards, building a school store for students, improving the faculty lounge, and painting a student designed mural in the entryway. 100 volunteers and WNY AmeriCorps members lent a hand. The renovation is one of three volunteer days planned for the Academy.
The Buffalo Academy of Science renovation is the fourth WNY school to be renovated by the HandsOn Schools: Revolution initiative by Hands On Greater Buffalo, The Home Depot, and WNY AmeriCorps. Previous projects have included the St. Augustine Scholar Program, Trinity Catholic Academy, and the Henry J. Kalfas Magnet School.
Founded on the belief that communities CAN make a positive change, HandsOn Schools applies an innovative approach to school revitalization. By uniting the collective resources of parents, communities, and corporations, HandsOn Schools aims to reestablish schools as the focal point of the community.
