"Morningtown Ride" is a song originally included on the 1965 World Record Club album, "Hide and Seekers", by the Australian pop/folk group The Seekers. The song was re-recorded by the group as a 1966 Christmas single on EMI/Columbia and went on top top the UK charts as their fourth number one single, selling in excess of 1 million copies.
The song was written by American blues/folk singer-songwriter Malvina Reynolds as a lullaby for children.
This video clip is from the Seekers' 1966 Australian television special "The Seekers at Home".
The audio in this video clip is the original stereo World Record Club version remastered in 1995 by EMI.

  • Thanks for posting! My fave Seekers tune. Was this filmed on the Puffing Billy train outside Melbourne?

  • @PhxRiles

yes it was. Puffing Billy steam excursions still run daily, i believe.

  • Thank you so much for posting this film. I loved this song as child in the 60's and on the rare occasions I hear it now I always get a lump in my throat remembering what a lovely childhood I had.

  • Heaven must be where Judith Durham sings all day :0)

  • Great train trip, a couple of years ago.

  • \Anyone else notice that that the little girl sitting on Judith's lap spends the first part of the video picking her nose and eating the excavated bogies?

  • @Hartsheart501 Too late ..I'm already in love with her

  • Has to be my fav tune love it

  • @catman5169 People have been saying that for generations... I think what happens is that every year produces a lot of "junk" and "noise" and a few gems, then you look back some years later and the good stuff has stood the test of time and the junk and noise has fallen away and been forgotten.

  • My absolute favorite video of all time. If you don't want to fall in love with Judith, do not view this video!

  • My favorite Seekers song.

  • This was great!! Thanks for posting. Can you imagine trying to do this today...with all the protection agencies in force? The kids hanging off the train...having fun...the protection police would have kittens on the spot. Makes me glad I grew up before all that...was around 13 when this was made....loved it then...love it now.

  • Looking at them this must have been very early on in their careers...

And yes Puffing Billy still runs most days. Was just up there last weekend and it still looks exactly like this picture (except in colour).
