Michael Hebb serves up more than food when he invites you to dinner. This is no surprise from someone who strongly believes that the table is one of the most effective and overlooked vehicles for changing the world.
In 2001, Hebb and partner Naomi Pomeroy opened an illegal restaurant in their Portland living room and kick-started the underground restaurant movement. In the next three years Pomeroy and Hebb opened critically acclaimed restaurants clarklewis and Gotham Bldg Tavern. After moving to Seattle in 2006, Hebb established One Pot to investigate the rituals of the table by collaborating with leading cultural organizations, museums and individuals including Gore Vidal, Spike Lee, Gloria Steinem and many others. His expansive, multidisciplinary dinners and cultural curation have taken place on five continents, been exhibited in several museums and featured in the NY Times, WSJ, Food and Wine, W, Art Forum, GQ, Gourmet and several international publications.

Thank you for this Michael, it is timely! Now with #OccupyWallStreet, there is an emerging concept of #OccupyEverything, including not just your city and streets, but your home, neighborhood and workplace. But what does that mean? It means to show up, step into personal responsibility, and hold yourself and others accountable - and to make your voice known. Hold an #OccupySalon, convene a dinner party, and #OccupyMyTable. We need a national conversation and this is a part of the solution.

My respect for TED stumbled a bit, seeing this crazy jerk being taken seriously by supposedly intellectual curious people. I guess it's true: the smartest people in the room have the least common sense.

the assumption that there needs to be a 'table' is well, an assumption. many cultures sit around on the floor or on a mat. in fact, i find the table kind of restrictive. set number of people. no movement opportunities. you are stuck with the same neighbors. if you sit on the floor or on whatever ledges are available in your environment you don't have these problems but you still get to enjoy the sociability of eating.

Great talk Michael. Having been to several of his dinners, I have to say he is living and creating exactly what he talks about here. There is a spirit of joy at Michael's events - and inspiration. I have had such great conversations with people at them, and often they are people I didn't know before the meal. Plus he puts them on with elegance, uniqueness and often a sense of humor (and yummy food!). Memorable events created by an artist!

Good stuff, Michael. Hang onto the edge of the table , its the last ledge of the commons on which to repair what is broken and reinvent what has been forgotten. Thanks for bringing the table to the fight.
