@tommiatkins Wasn't the M14 only put into use in the Vietnam era though?
-
@DGneoseeker1 They did. And they made it automatic. Called it the M14

@DGneoseeker1 I dont know the exact ratio but the MP40 was used mostly by squad leaders, paratroopers and crews. So the normal rifleman used *suprise* the Kar98k rifle. Later the first assault rifle STG44 and the semi auto rifles G41/G43 came. Production numbers: KAR98k: 14mil; MP40:1mil; STG44: 700k; G41/G43: 400k. I dont know the american numbers but i suspect the thompson was only used by squad leaders. But i dont really know the squad organisations of the time.

@AffigesEtwas Bolt action? Ew.... WEll, that explains a lot.
Though I'm curious about the ratios of rifles to submachine guns on both sides.
A lot of popular media seems to suggest the Germans had more MP40s compared to how many Thompsons the Americans were using. Could just be a bias in the movies/comics.games though.

@DGneoseeker1 the germans only used 5 round clips and their rifles are bolt action. that is a big enough advantage for the m1. Your question with the thompson: The rifles used a much more powerful round than the smg´s wich use pistol ammunition. And they are more accurate. And the concept of the BAR is a oddity.

audie murphy is such a confabulist. like this bs ever happened. what he really did was move to that first fox whole and use those guns while mounted to shoot those other mg spots.

*insert thumbs up reference here*
Thumbs up if you think those are always the dumbest ocmments.

@DGneoseeker1 I suppose it was mainly a cost factor, they had to use what they could make cheaply and in huge numbers like the Sherman.

@Anders2185 Hm. But why have a pisstakingly tiny magazine size like the M1? I'm mystified as to why they didn't put at least a 20 round box magazine on the standard rifle. They obviously realized it was a good idea when you consider they made the BAR.
it must have been like loosing his mother all over again he is the definition of courage
