A short clip of the Ssang Gummu performance from the 2002 World Haidong Gumdo Championships.

Ssang Gummu is a rare form not commonly practised in gumdo. Its emphasis is not on power or speed but on smooth, fluidity of movement. Much like Tai Chi, it's movements may appear deceptively simple however they are far from it.

  • Yes, but very few cultures grow in a bubble. They are influenced by the other cultures they interact with (good or bad). Korean martial arts can still be korean even though the seeds for some may have originated elsewhere.

  • v9a9v, your comment's been removed since it is technically spam. The Korea v Japan nationalistic pride war that seems to dominate every martial arts discussion group has no place here.

I don't mind positive or negative critisim of the videos so long as they're based on the forms, movements and techniques presented. However I will not tolerate derogatory comments against one culture or another.

  • Why did they stop the clip right before she cuts the mat? Very nice though.

  • That's how it was originally edited. Just as she's about to cuts the jipdan the camera switches to a second sangg gummu demonstrator (though not quite as good). We never see the cut, unless there's additional footage out there which I hope will be posted :)

  • Nice it looks almost Chinese

  • I beleive it does have some Chinese influence. Unfortunately I'm not as familiar with Chinese MA's so I can't pick out which.

  • OOO my master did this before XD!

  • It is graceful....

  • You should check out wudang style taiji sword form, has a lot of similarities.

  • wow amazing!!

  • Almost Chinese? Circular motions, true enough...Why do people always define Korean martial Arts as "Chinese" or "Japanese"? When they are obviously Korean in Spirit and content? Regardless of the old statement,"Korea is like a dog sleeping between tigers", Korean Arts are not so simply definated as such. Each cultue adds it's unique beauty to the collective Spirit.
