And the flashing star on the pole beneath the diner sign can be seen at the In The Heat Of The Night display at the train station in Sparta. When I visited the art gallery that occupies the train dept in Sparta in 2007, they had no idea the rusted out star was from the diner. If you're ever in the area, it's wprth seeing, but call ahead to make sure the Misselhorn Art Gallery is open! Mostly local art. They have some items related to the the movie for sale, but not many.

I love what this movie does with the cheif. You come to love his character, and you also realize he really is a good guy at heart. In fact, all the police really are good people. Absolute genuis in film history.
