During the course of World War II, self-propelled guns became increasingly more important and more numerous in every theatre of conflict.
The basic concept involved fitting an artillery piece, in place of a turret, onto the chassis of a tank. This enabled obsolete tanks to be upgunned, and captured tanks to be equipped with weapons from the host nation's armoury. The range of variants was as numerous as the possible combinations of tank chassis and gun, but as the war progressed the trend was to produce heavier and more powerful weapons both as tank destroyers and as assault guns.
Assault guns mounted howitzers and were used in support of infantry, while tank destroyers mounted high velocity anti tank weapons and were used in a battlefield role against tank formations.
