Got my new "female" Eastern Box Turtle today. It arrived in good condition from it's trip. However upon close examination I'm not so sure it's a female. It has a bit of a curve on it's plastron & fairly bright orange eyes plus it's tail looks like a male too.No big deal if it's a male & I could be wrong. One other thing I noticed after I made the vid when I was checking it out is it has a bit of an abscess behind it's left ear.I believe they often get these after getting over an ear infection. The turtle seems in good health otherwise & is alert & strong & active & is a good eater.I will have to deal with the abscess soon but will let it get used to the yard & feed it up good 1st. SEe "part 2" for more on this.

  • Not only that but tens of thousands are killed by cars on the roads every year. When they cut hay by tractors and chopped up in brush hogs. The wild populations are crashing thats the truth and nobody cares !!! In the future the only place you might see them is in the zoo.

  • @Walter5734 It's not my fault that morons in your state run over them on the roads & it's also not my fault that people in your state are encroaching on their natural habitat. If you're so concerned maybe you should get a movement going to get your lawmakers to enforce the laws & crack down on the people collecting & selling turtles. In my opinion the 7 turtles I bought recently were saved from a long slow death in an indoor tank.

  • @Walter5734

p.s. Nice Nazi flag wallpaper on your page!! I never knew Neo Nazis were concerned about turtles.

  • Thats a Wild caught specimen i guess you don't really care about the Wild Box turtle populations. Imagine if all people living in california which is over 30 million wanted to own 12 Box turtles can you imagine what affect that would have on the wild populations. We have people living around locally who just drive around and collect thundreds and thousands of box turtles every year they just throw them in the back of their pickup trucks so you can order them online and its illegal.

  • @Walter5734

If I hadn't bought these turtles someone else would have & they would have most likely ended up in a 10 ga. tank for the rest of their lives. At least here they live in a natural outdoor habitat & are well taken care of.I bought 7 yturtle recently. The other 5 are--1. a female I've had since 1990,2--a 7 yr. old female that was hatched in my old turtle yard,3--a 3 yr. old female that was hatched in my old yard,4--a male I got free froma guy on craig's list who found it in his yard

  • @Walter5734

and 5--a male that I got from a teacher that had been kept in a 10 ga. tank in a schoolroom for over 5 years. As long as people buy them people will sell them.Better a few go to a good home in my turtle yard than having them all end up as toys for children living a life of misery in a small tank until they finally die.

  • @ronsimple Ron, sorry but your an idiot, your helping the populations crash by illegalyl buying these turtles, their on the Endangered Species list, their not legally allowed to be sold as pets, much less caught in the wild and kept in captivity, would you mind giving me your name, phone number, exact state and street address and other details? oh and the details of the person who sold you these turtles? it doesnt matter who buys them form who, your both doing something highly illegal!

  • @IggytheIguana97 its illegal to keep buy or sell eastern box turtles, their an endangered species and its not even legal to keep them if you find them in the wild

  • my turtle has an ear absess. im really scared and i dont know how much the herp vet will cost. please answer back telling me if there is a way to cure her. its a juvenile red eared slider. PLEASE anwere back:'(

  • @ronsimple Heck i live right in the middle of Box turtles natural habitat and i have never kept even one Box turtle in captivity ever.

  • @ronsimple At certain times of the year it was all you could do while driving down the road to keep from hitting them and the average specimen was larger looked healthier and more robust that they do now. I guess thats because the people collecting them on the roads prefer the larger more robust turtles to sell as pets and because the larger a turtle is the easier it is to spot them on the road and thats not counting all the Box turtles i have seen on the roads smashed by trucks and cars.

  • @ronsimple A person can justifiy just about anything. It is still encouraging people to buy these animals online and at certain pet stores way outside the natural range of these animals its best just to leave nature alone, just take a photo. Its a much better idea, the continued uncontrolled harvesting of these animals from the Wild is unsustainable. Thats the truth i remember about just 12 years ago these animals where extremely abundant where i live criss crossing the roads to such an extent.
