Every year, millions of dollars are literally going up in smoke in Nigeria, Africa's top crude oil-exporting nation, as companies burn off unwanted natural gas released during oil production.

This flaring and venting produces more greenhouse-gas emissions than any other single source in Africa south of the Sahara, and many who live in Nigeria's oil-producing communities complain of chronic health and environmental problems associated with the gas flares.

  • @tech4156 "russians and chinese should come in and take over"

    Are you nuts!

Just google a map of air pollution from Chlorofluorocarbons and take a look at the big red sploch over China.

  • Kill the planet, and it'll kill you back. That can not be argued with

  • Companies in Nigeria? AMERICAN COMPANIES!

  • Gass it up!!!!!

  • @TheSbandD Yes, in fact, sadly, even if they want to export natural gas under liquefied forms, it's more cost efficient to exploit dedicaces gas fields for that and continue to flare this "associated gas " (gas which comes dissolved in oil).

To produce say one billion cubic feet a day of natural gas from associated production (and shut down the flares) you need to collect gas from hundreds of oil wells, transport it, compress it. A lot of work.

Drilling in a "pure" gas field is easier :-(

  • They burn the natural gas because oil companies in Nigeria are not willing to spend extra money on infrastructure to transport and/or inject the Natural Gas underground.

  • So why are they wasting natural gas then?

Couldn't that energy be sold and used elsewhere??
