Alex Barnard, President of the Princeton University Band, joins Ian Auzenne on WPRB News' The Week in Review on 9/22/2008. Barnard is on to discuss the incident this past weekend at the Citadel, where, allegedly, members of the PU band were harassed by cadets. This is Part One of Three.

  • @ktm2smoker - Granted, I was still a senior in high school when this event happened, but based on what I have gathered during my freshman year at Princeton (I am a member of the PUB, btw), the whole mess was a misunderstanding on both sides, and people overreacted, simple as that. So before trying to insult us from just a "story" you heard from your cousin -- which, I'm sorry to say, probably contained some amount of exaggeration -- get a better idea of what really happened that day.

  • This kid is a B**CH!(laughing)... just look who is giving the message, youtube "Barnard Screams" enough said...

  • Many of us have enlisted time as well. Don't stereotype us.

  • I think they'd be happy to come back and give you guys another rousing performance.

  • This is funny...It's like a gaggle of ass-clowns running around in circles. I'm sure you didn't expect to get jumped while playing grab ass on the hallowed ground of a military institution, you get that course in your fourth year. It's called "Common Sense for Liberals" and it falls right between two other important Princeton pillars, "Reconciliation of Over-Priced Educations," and, "Why Self-Service Trumps Service to Country."

  • my cousin goes to the citadel and is a sophmore. he told us exactly what happened. he told us that the Princeton band thought that they would come to the heart of the south and have an anti-dixie theme. thats the stupidest fucking idea ever. honestly. for an ivy league school yall have some dumbasses who thought it would be good to make fun of a conservative MILITARY school. you deserve everything you got. and you wonder why your own football team hates you...

  • Slodier Josh,

Thank you for your service. As a soldier and a Citadel grad I can promise you there is a great deal of prior enlisted that attend the school. A large number of cadets are actually reservists who are deployed while at The Citadel. So "wannabe soldiers" is an unfair statement. Other than that you were not there and can't speak on behalf of either side.

  • Great, just great.

Lower enlisted soldiers, like myself, who have been deployed to Iraq and been in combat on a daily basis have to endure being called war criminals and baby killers, while retaining our military bearing. Yet these wannabe soldiers who have yet to actually serve their country can run a mack and tarnish our name. I hope all these cadets are reprimanded and lose their chance at a commission. Our job is to protect the American people, not torment them.

  • Please note, it says during shows, not during our fucking field day and DEFINITELY without showing respect on the Avenue of remembrance.

  • A clash of cultures- Knowing the band's reputation for presenting satire during shows, as well as general misconduct indicates the College leadership that approved the actions didn't predict the likely reaction by the Corps.

Statements such as "playing The Dukes..would have received a better reception" or "field day..forced recess?" Stupidity or arrogance?

Does everything have to involve sensationalism to be entertaining?
