it's not really fair to judge the two. they're not contemporaries. Minnie is obviously a big influence. Minnie broke the ground. Mariah took it to a whole other place.

mariah is better. Of course minnie also better. but mariah's technique, especially on the poked whistle note at emotions, and the melisma whistle at bliss. Really impressive.

@capcomfighter13 I'm not going to choose, or compare between the two of them, either. As you said, "it's 'apples and oranges,' " when it comes to any discussion of Minnie Riperton's, and Mariah Carey's, voices. Though they both used the "whistle"-pitch, their voices were different.
