This multi-modal simulation has been realized with VISSIM. It shows the current situation at an intersection situated near the central station of Strasbourg. Two bus lines and two tramlines cross this intersection. The stations at this junction are one of the nearest stations of the mentioned tramlines to Strasbourg Central. So there are high-demand pedestrian crossing movements at the intersection. A lot of pedestrians cross the intersection diagonally without respecting the traffic lights. The vehicle demand, however, is relatively low. The tram has absolute priority and the two simulated junctions are coordinated.

The aim of this project was the improvement of pedestrian crossing movements at the junction without having any negative impact on the vehicle flow and the public transport priority.

This simulation helped to evaluate different strategies for management of high-demand pedestrian crossing movements and to visualize the recommended project.

  • Why some pederestians are crossing on red light??

  • @87Bartlomiej : Thank you for your question. It is modelled this way. People do it in reality and VISSIM allows this as well to be modelled in the simulation. This is shown in detail in this youtube video: NrpW1e8IFeA

In case you should come to Strasbourg one day, take a look to this area (close to the station). It is very lively and one can really observe all degrees of obediance to traffic signals. By the way: some cyclists as well head on at red light (as in reality).
