Great question...I would suggest STAYING AWAY from the "Novelty rod and reels". You are much better off to train a child from the start to do things the right way. I have found Flueger and Shakespeare both make small spinning and closed faced combos that kids adapt to quickly. A 5' road and small reel are perfect for panfish and great way to break them in. I generally pick mine up at Gander Mountain They range $40-50 and if taken care will last a very, very long time. Thanks! r.b.
