i ride a fixed not in avelodrome but i kno my shit but when it comes to velodrome racing i only kno the diciplines and whos the best out there. what exactly is a scratch race? havent heard the term before
In the field in this footage there are national junior champs, world junior medalists, masters world medalists and champs and guys racing at elite state and national level.
While it looks like a paceline, you can still see guys attacking off the front continually through the race making the bunch react.
You'd be very lucky indeed to finish using 88, moreso to actually cover the speeds over the last couple of laps of around 60+km/h.
Wow. I've never ridden a 96 inch gear for mass start events. Generally I sprinted in an 88 inch gear, including a personal best 11.3 200m max speed 44.5mph, and went up to a 90 inch gear for miss-n-outs where my strategy was sitting on the front. My 52x15 was reserved for Kilos. In general terms the only races I have seen or been in that were all out paceline events were madisons, and even those have moments of bunching (even in the olympics). The old track racer's creed, "spin to win."
Speed is quite high for this race, makes it hard for the riders to bunch up as your doing a greater distance if your out wide and you have to push the air, so it's best to stay on a wheel in the pace line until your ready to make your move for the final sprint.
I know just how fast these go as I have raced against those guys, when your spinning a 96 inch gear that fast for the whole race it hurts quite a lot.
That was some interesting footage. Never saw a scratch race strung out like a pace line for the whole distance before. Most of the ones I have been in bunch up several times.
how fast you going??

May I ask what kind of pencil cam you used? It looks like it works pretty darn good and I would like to buy one for myself if I could.
