test your knowledge of economics......Taken from... Land of the Free, Home of the Poor | PBS NewsHour | Aug. 16, 2011
Financial gains over the last decade in the United States have been mostly made at the "tippy-top" of the economic food chain as more people fall out of the middle class. The top 20 percent of Americans now holds 84 percent of U.S. wealth, as Paul Solman found out as part of a Making Sen$e series on... http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/business/july-dec11/makingsense_08-16.html

  • Country 1 is a horrible place.

  • @eyeammi Just so you know "russellviews" and "Niltomega" are the same person.

I'm not going to split hairs over word definitions. what it comes down to is America is in a slump. A big one too.No one was complaining about the rich when we all were buying McMansions and living richly on credit. Like everything else it will pass. America is not out yet. It's not our time.

  • @niltomega Interesting. What I think you're trying to imply is the verb "redistributing" by forceful means. Is that what it means to be a socialist?

  • @eyeammi However in economics, which is the subject at hand, "Distribution of wealth" refers to "among members in a society ".

It would seems you feel it should be spread evenly regardless of effort. You are an outright socialist. America is a Capitalist country because we recognize the ONLY place money is created is from a private business, and it works wonderfully.

  • @Russellviews *sigh* "distributION" is a NOUN. It's a mathematical term for how things are spread out. For example, a fat distribution describes how much and where the fat is on the body, not how or why the fat is where it is.

Consequently the wealth distribution in the US is similar to the fat distribution of an over eater. They try to eat as much as they can get their hands on and it piles up mostly around the assholes.

  • I guess we the people of the United States of America are idiots to not go to Sweden

But I am moving to Russia, because my grandparents are growing OPIUM POPPIES! >:D

  • @Ralphdraw3 Ah, the 'Clinton Surplus' delusion. The reality is Clinton did no such thing. What he actually did was raid the Social Security Fund (which was already severely underfunded) by having it buy government bonds with below market interest rates. This has brought forward the inevitable failure of the Social Security Ponzi Scheme by several years.

  • @Ralphdraw3 Ah, I see, you're using the Democratic definition of 'cut', which is 'not as large an increase as we wanted'.

So, how much MORE did you want the already substantial increase in the page count and complexity of the banking regulations in 1999 to be?
