1. copy /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow to your destination

2. open john the ripper

3. unshadow the both files to a text file

./unshadow [ passwd file ] [shadow file] [destination file ]

4. crack using john the ripper

./john [file]

  • Hey i Sort of understand what you did there but where was and whos password did you crack??

  • @BondyBabez i was cracking all passwords of user names in Linux similar to windows users the password files are stored in /etc/passwd , etc/shadow

    first we copy both the files then we are merge them to a single file crack.txt using unshadow commond

    then crack using jtr

  • @djd1993 - hes using an operating system called backtrack 4, backtrack is a linux based operating system designed for penetration testing and is packed full of tools like john the ripper, metasploit, etc. the shell konsole is the terminal of backtrack just like cmd is the terminal or shell or wtv of a windows os. backtrack can be run as a live disc or as a virtual machine, look up installing backtrack for more details
