Michael Hudson talks about the "making every dime count" technique for building high performance cultures.

Commit yourself every day to "catching people doing stuff right." If you spend more time trying to catch people in your organization doing things right, and less time trying to catch them doing things wrong, you'll have stronger culture, people who are more excited about performance, and better functioning organizations. The problem occurs when people only see leaders when something has gone wrong.

An entrepreneur I worked with applied "catch people doing stuff right" policy by picking up 20 dimes at the beginning of the day and putting them in his right pocket. Every time he caught an employee doing something right he took the time to praise them on the spot and congratulate them for their good performance. As a tracking advice, when he walked away, he took a dime from his right pocket and put it in his left pocket. What it committed him to doing every day was catching at least 20 members of his team doing something right. He recognized a couple of very important things:
1. If you don't measure it and don't track it, it doesn't get done.
2. Rather than sending a generic e-mail, he did face to face interaction and made sure his praise was specific to each action that was moving the organization towards its long term goals.

Bottomline: If you'll take the time to make every dime count, you'll build a stronger high performance culture and your credit union will achieve more success.
