  • It's NOT a german quality, the components come from a noname country,

beacause it's cheaper for the VW AG and it was assembled in another noname

    country from the same reason.

  • It's probably the throw-out bearing. Still nothing but an overpriced German POS, though.

Then again, the 1.4 and 1.6 gasser trannies have had issues with the rivets holding the ring gear to the differential shearing out. And they've had it for a long time. There's even bolt kit out for it.

Exactly the problem helgih580's had, whether he knows it or not.

  • Never had transmission problems with my Golf MK4 and it has nearly 200.000km... but then again it's a TDI, with a solid 5speed gearbox.

  • I googled ''VW ERT Gearbox'' and clicked the first link which said ''VW gearbox failure'' . This is exactly what happened to mine, a hole punched through (although at 60.000 miles rather than 50.000 miles). This kinda sucks because now I know that the gearbox that I got instead will fail as well even with special care :(. Mine is however 98 model (says it only affects 99 and up but that was NOT so in my case).

  • I have a 98 Golf GL 1.6 and the transmission broke down around 60,000 miles. Apparently there was a hole in it and most of the oil leaked out (I had put oil in it the year before and you shouldn't have to babysit it). Then when I went on a long trip it overheated and got damaged. Shortly after, the bearing for my clutch broke so there was a horrible noise (but still somewhat usable). I was lucky since this was over a year ago, now all golfs with these trannies are failing and prices have doubled

  • how much for the fix? and was it any harD?

  • I would care if you hear the sound while driving, this might be some ordinairy clutch sound too.

  • VW Beetle could be fixed with just a flat screwdriver, a spanner, a pair of pliers and some steel wire...

  • it is the FLYWHEEL
