Actually this song dates back from the plague in Europe. Parsley sage rosmary and thyme were the herbs they used to ward off the plague and to staunch the smell of the bodies. My husband's family are Scarborough's and there is Scarborough castle in England to this day even though it is in ruins from many assaults.
