Tom has created a persona that has developed over the years and, in my opinion, fits the mood of his music perfectly. There is nothing pretentious about it. Yes, he's pretending in that I do not think he acts exactly like that when he's at home with his wife and kids, but he is not claiming that this is his true character; he's just performing.

I believe he actually does act like this with his wife, in private, all the time, as his only persona. He is a very eccentric man, often spending weeks inventing maddeningly unique musical instruments. This is not schtick. This is Tom.
