And yes you are right, what is considered right-wing and left-wing has evolved a lot over time, because the political spectrum in general has tended to move towards the center. Both the traditional right (i.e. advocates of feudalism, theocracy, absolute monarchy, etc) and the fascist/Nazi right have more or less disappeared, so that the right-wing today is limited mainly to conservative liberalism and non-fascist nationalism... which would have been considered leftist 150 years ago.
... and on the other side there's everything else, in the same bag as Nazism and communism and every most evil thing you can think of. It's a really childish and ridiculous tactic of systematic smearing of their rivals, but as a result many Americans are left totally confused about what left-wing, right-wing, socialism, fascism, etc etc mean.
Oh please. Fascism (including Nazism) and socialism really aren't the same thing at all. Unless you define "socialism" as "everything but extreme free market capitalism". Rush Limbaugh, FOX, et al spend their time slinging mud at liberals and leftists by trying to paint a picture of the world where on the one side there's their own harsh brand of hardline US conservativism, ...
It should be understood first that socialism in the name 'National Socialism' had nothing to do with socialism from its beginning - it was deliberately named this way so to attract support from the workers. The Nazis were historically anti-communist. Left wingers will always be left wingers and right wingers will always be right wingers - and who do you think deserves greater credit?
Socialism, the idea socialism is a left wing phenomenon only, is not really accurate. Governments like that of Fransico of Spain, Mussolini, and National Socialism of Germany prove that socialism is not only a left phenomenon.
It's just that the so called right today is not really the same right of old. Infact it is best to say the term right-wing has been hijacked by people who are the total opposite of right-wing.

Fascism has had a huge surge in Austria, and even where it is illegal in Germany.
