Sunset Siding Part 1 - Box Hill 2005 - Australian Model Railway Layout

A very simple but effective gypsum mining operation set in outback Victoria. Built to HO scale on 18.3mm gauge track to represent the Victorian braod gauge. Layout is based on the line from Nowingi (south of Mildura) towards Millewa South as it was in 1981 when CSR were hauling gypsum with an ex-VR M class diesel and converted Y class steam loco.

The long layout with sparse scenery really gives the impression you're a long way from civilisation! No doubt the real mining operation would have been very hot and dusty in summertime.

where did u get those cars? i;m looking to make a small mining operation, and those are perfect!!!!!

The wagons are mostly Victorian Railways "GY" wagons. These are available as kits and RTR by various manufacturers in Australia.

Was this layout at the Ballarat exhibition a few years ago? It looks like one that I saw there.

It's been to quite a few exhibitions so may well have appeared at Ballarat, but unfortunately I can't confirm it for you.

In my personal opinion, this is one of the best Australia prototype layouts in existence - the simplicity is startling and should we ever decide to take our model trains to the World (in lieu of letting the rest of the World bring their prototypes here)this is one of the layout I would take to exhibitions in Europe, Great Britian and the USA
