I've fired several different types of 50 BMG rifles before. They usually kick about like a 12 ga shotgun. The recoil is kept down by the fact that most weight 30+ pounds (my current one is 34 lbs). Last Saturday while shooting at a local range, a gentleman offered to let me fire his lightweight 50. I don't recall the model or manufacturer, but he said it was the lightest 50 BMG rifle currently made. I think he said 11 pounds.
Because of its reduced weight, this thing kicked harder than any other shoulder fired small arm I've ever shot. Luckily, the glass had a decent eye relief, so I was able to eliminate paralax without getting an "idiot mark" on my eyebrow. I can't imagine this rifle would have done anything NOT requiring stitches had I not kept back from the scope and maintained a proper shoulder and cheek weld.
Having said that, it's a nice rifle if you had the need to carry it a ways. The recoil aside, it's an extremely accurate setup (although the range we were at didn't have the distance to fully appreciate what a 50 can do).
