And in Indias state of West Bengal, security forces are fighting Maoist rebels near the town of Lalgarh. But caught in the crossfire are the residents of a small village.
Security personnel launched their operation against the rebels from Pirakata village a short distance from Lalgarh.
But fear stalks the villagers now trapped in the exchange of fire between the communist rebels and security forces.
For these villagers the situation is very frightening.
[Asoke Bharti, Villager]:
"In our village the paramilitary forces are engaged in a clash with the Maoists and exchanges of fire have been taking place. We never faced such a situation before. Such incidents never took place in our village. How are we going to cope with it?
The Maoists, who are seeking power through an armed struggle, have killed at least 10 government supporters this week.
[Asoke Bharti, Villager]:
If the situation remains like this, then how will we venture out of our homes? Our lives are at stake. They (the Maoists) have been forcing people to join them at night. If we refuse, they beat us, what are we going to do?"
The Maoists operate from jungle bases in this region. To expand their influence here the rebels are tapping into local resentment at a government push to introduce industry into the area.
