This song, based on Abel Meeropol's poem and later set to music, condemns the lynching of African Americans, very common at the time in the South of the United States.
Columbia Records refused to record the song, by fear of the reaction of white customers. In 1939, Holiday made a deal with another company to record and distribute the song.
"Strange Fruit" was eventually recognized as a masterpiece, becoming Holiday's biggest selling-record.
Done for an English project.
Awesome! Athmospheric! Talented!
Thanks.
