An example of Shape key on Blender, I use that to animate eyelids, mouth, eyebrow and pupil's eye,

  • The best method actually is make shape keys and manage it with drivers (bones).

    It's much better and intuitive.

  • I know this is an example of animating using shape keys, but a more encompassing method is using bones. Granted, some rigs may be difficult to set up initially, but once it is, you have ultimate freedom and flexibility with the mesh to pose it without deforming the mesh itself. Non-destructive animation, you could say.
