On the 18-4-2006 Helen Clark the Prime Minister of New Zealand said in answer to a question regarding fuel prices being so high "I'm sure (the rise in oil prices) is causing concern in every country. Because everyone is on the receiving end of the same phenomenon. Which is oil prices very high, because WE'RE PROBABLY NOT TOO FAR SHORT OF PEAK PRODUCTION, IF NOT ALREADY THERE, and that concentrates the mind..... snip.... yet her fool minister of energy David Parker came out a week later saying the world wouldn't peak until 2030 - 37, we truly have idiots for leaders in New Zealand, and that goes for National as well, another bunch of con artistes who think the Kiwi Saver is a good idea, while in the light of Helen's peak oil statement we (those who can work it out) know there will not be an economy worth 2 cents soon enough
I told ya so.

31 March 2009 -- The General Assembly today confirmed the appointment of former Prime Minister Helen Clark of New Zealand as the new head of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

UNDP is the largest of the independently funded UN agencies and, under its special General Assembly mandate, leads the world body's work on eradicating extreme poverty and promoting good governance in the developing world.

Miss Clark's nomination for UNDP Administrator was forwarded by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to the Assembly after an extensive selection process, which included the establishment of a senior appointments panel chaired by the Deputy Secretary-General and consisting of senior UN officials as well as two outside experts in financial and developmental economics.

She replaces Kemal Dervis of Turkey, who had been in the post since 2005 and stepped down on 1 March for family and personal reasons.

Miss Clark had been a member of the New Zealand Parliament since 1981, and was Prime Minister from 1999 to 2008, while concurrently holding a number of other portfolios including Minister of Arts, Culture and Heritage.

  • the New Zealand media seem to be about the only national media that regularly report peak oil. They don't have much if any of their own, and they are a long way from anywhere. Good reasons to be more aware!

  • Unfortunately they let Helen get away with telling them that all they hold dear eg food, security, and the lives of their loved ones are coming to an end, because that is what peak production of oil is = the end of the world as we know it. and only 1 website and 1 local paper reported Helen's statement, to the best of my knowledge

  • LOVE the juxtaposition here. Nice. :)

  • Helen is all politics. Always the academic. Try getting a bus in Auckland on Sunday. The public transport system is appalling and got far worse during her watch.

The busses here in sunny Bangkok are way better than the ones in Auckland an this is a developing nation.

  • Good comment. We are a long way from anywhere, probably why we are more aware of the problem. Then again, nearly everyone I know there, myself included, grows their own food... so when the shit (maybe) hits the fan, NZ would probably be quite a good, safe place to be.

  • At least she admits it... here in Germany they mostly ignore the topic.

  • New oil will be very expensive. There is massive investment in Canadian oil sands that cost over $60/barrel to produce.

The biggest oil field in the word, Ghawar, is almost spent.
