The UK Independence Party is the only British party who advocate direct democracy in Britain We believe that the British people should have a say in the decision making process

  • I can't believe its got to the stage where democracy is a revolutionary idea again in the UK

  • 4:22 Love it that they ranked Sweden as number 5. As a Swede I tell you my own experience that Sweden is not really a democracy any more. You wouldn't believe the hysteria when about ~300.000 Swedes voted for a political party that had previously not been in parliament. Sweden might officially be a democracy, but not many democrats live here, least of all most of our politicians. The general people mentality is somewhat between a dictatorship and democracy and that nothing changes.

  • Decision making takes a long time, people able to make laws which may contravene international treaties, or international laws.

    ...Sounds great.

  • How does Direct Democracy "Help unite the various religions of Switzerland" when it caused the banning of minaret construction?

  • @skifi1 You are sooooooo wrong. If that was the case we would not have the Scottish and Welsh nationalist movements wanting indpenence from the UK as they have been fully integrated parts of the UK for over 500 years. the same is also true of the Basques in Spain. The point you ahve missed is nationality is not where you live, its who you are. A German is still a German because it is engrained in his upbringing. He could not stop being a German any more than a fish could climb a tree.

  • @marklandynut TBH I do not see a big probelm in a change of such scale . and you don´t needto forget anthing ppl would just need to accept new identity .. It does not really make any difference if ur polish, german, british, spanish etc even now .. so why having this limits from the past .. in 2 or 3 generations pls would not remember that there were some germans etc .. they would feel more united. I am not long on this world but I don´t want nationalism of today and past ...

  • @marklandynut you actually repeated the same I wrote before ... :D

  • The total union of europe into one state is an idea doomed to fail because it requires massive cultural changes. However what can be achieved is an alliance of indepent states who work together with mutual co-operation and respect. That is the Europe I want to see, and I believe that Europe would thrive and prosper.

Just for reference, the EU is NOT the first attempt to unite europe. Many have tried before and failed, including Napolean and Charlemagne. Oh, and the EU was born in the early 30's

  • The unions that have worked are the USA and the UK. the USA works because the dominan European based cultures are mixed so thoroughly they have effectively fused into one culture, whilst the minority cultures (Native American plus African and Indian) are generally so small they can't compete. As for the UK, that was achieved by absolute conquest and sujugation. It was done very thoroghly so there was nothing of the the dominated cultures left, but now after 500 years the cracks are showing again

  • Lets look at the history of multicultural 'unions'. Here are a few examples where attempts have been made to fuse cultures into one nation. The USSR, China, British Empire, Holy Roman Empire, the three Reichs, the Napoleonic Empire. They all have one thing in common. They failed because of cultural friction. China is only just haning on because it is ruled with an iron fist. There are in fact only a couple of unions that have worked, and even they have problems.
