Recording lo-fi four-track songs in Wisconsin worked for Bon Iver's Justin Vernon -- and for Alex Schaaf of Yellow Ostrich. After relocating to New York City and recruiting a band -- multi-instrumentalist Jon Natchez and drummer Michael Tapper -- Schaaf moved on from the moody solo music of those Dairyland recordings toward a robust, powerful sound on Yellow Ostrich's new album, STRANGE LAND. Here, they talk about how they met, melding their influences into one sound and using music to connect with others over the strains of an instrumental "When All Is Dead."
