Another example of jazz influenced early "classical" recordings. Rio Grande, composed in 1927 by English composer/conductor Constant Lambert and recorded for Columbia in 1930 with Lambert conducting the Halle Orch. He was especially taken with American jazz, inspiring many of his works, the most famous of which is this Rio Grande. Lambert (1905-1951) died
young from untreated diabetes and alcoholism. The prominent piano part is played by the Irish conductor/composer Sir Hamilton Harty
(1879-1941). He was the principal conductor of the Halle Orch. for a number of years.

  • I remember singing this in a university choir concert in 1994-5 and every time "blowing orders on their trumpets" came up, I would sing "spreading butter on their crumpets". Ha!
