You don;t just need one of them servers. if you got am old computer hanging around. Buy a Windows Home Server installion disc. install it and there you go. Thats what i done

depends on how much you want, you could use one of those, they are smaller, and the work is done. But requires if you dont need it to anything else.

i require a home server , for file storage and backup etc can any one recommend some server or should i build a custom pc ?

In Sweden you can buy the Home Server software without the hardware.

You don´t have to be working at Microsoft to do that.
