@ageshero Fluorescent lamps gets hot only on the sides, where the electrodes are placed. The rest of the tube can be handled without too much problems, especially the longer ones.
The tube itself doesn't emit any radiation except the light itself, it's the ballast that does.

Not exactly unaltered... You see, they've been trying to reduce mercury in fluorescent lamps ever since they knew the effects of it.
