you can not use car alternator without replacing one lot of coils 4 permanet magnets i suggest fisher and paykel motor rewire as per you green dream .com i or dc fan mots maybe old fan motor off wreck car each has 2 if u spill them more success then i like the look of magnet gearbox cheap u tube search no friction or wear hope this helps from mike in aussie ps the fisher and paykel put out ac then need bridge rectiftiar to convert to dc i use the car alt 4 this thow the rest

Wouldn't a load of small permanent magnets fixed around the outer circumference of the wooden ring passing a fixed coil create a voltage? something like that wouldn't put ANY load on the turbine.

Looks great I am working on something very similar, great work!

@kevlauenterprises Sorry, Auto Alternators, Any Old School Alternator should work BUT they have to reach a certain RPM to maintain their 13.5 Voltage output. Some will go higher so you would also have to put a Voltage Regulator on it. Some newer Alternators have the Voltage Regulator built in. Soon I will have my gearing finished for my VAWT and send you a video on it. I'm going to hook it up to a dead generator that I salvaged and have a battery bank of 10 12V battery's.

I was going to try a pulley system but though that might put too much drag on it and not allow it to operate in a low wind situation. I left enough room for that or a stator/magnet assembly but all the attempts at one of those failed so far...too much spent on parts.
Yes, it would. That is what I am trying to accomplish but my problem is doing the coil and figuring that out. I need to get the extra cash for the magnets I want to use as well. Any ideas you may have would be appreciated. This thing spins real good in light wind!

were to get these type magnets?
maybe you can use a few small motors like kids power wheels motors as miny generators
this is proof of concept size, i think wider vertion with more blades would have the tork you need to turn something like a pancake motor as a generator.
missouriwindandsolar sells them!
high power at low speed!
instead of 16" across maybe you need 3' radius for enoph tork.

@davidrrrd The magnets were purchased from kjmagnetics (dot) com and run about $17.00 ea. Pretty strong N42 grade NEODYMIUM RING MAGNETS. I do have a larger, wider version I'll be mounting to test as well. Thanks for the info.

Have you thought about using a old school auto alternator ? It all depends on how much power you need to generate. If your just looking to charge 12v batteries I would go that rout. You might be able to go to the salvage and get a auto alternator there cheep. Jut remember if you go to charge 12v batteries to put a voltage regulator on it.
PS: Are you using magnets to levitate this ? It looks like it :) That's AWESOME :)
Great Work

@WulfBand I am using the magnets to levitate the unit. Cuts back a ton on drag.

@WulfBand What type of alternator are you referring to? I picked up 7 alternators for a real good deal but spinning any of them does not produce any output voltage. Is there a special brand or yr. trat will work like that and generate power w/o a power source or just from spinning it?
