This is a historical video document (© Imperial War Museum) took by english army in S.Polo and Civitella Val di Chiana.
The massacre of 244 civilians in Civitella (29 June 1944) done by german soldiers, was a revenge for the two Wehrmacht soldiers killed by partisans. 65 people were killed in S.Polo in an anti-partisan action, before Wehrmacht left the city.

I want to share this video not to intensify the rancour but to give evidence to brutality and madness of EVERY war. Everywhere and everytime...

    ciao

  • Ciao again! Nice to meet an "expatriated fellow countrymen" of Arezzo. My grandmother was from San Andrea a Pigli, that is a really small town near Civitella in Val di Chiana (consider about 4-5 houses). She escaped from the german reprisal and she told me some stories about that period when I was child. Recently the municipality reopen the trial against some german officer...I think it's time to write the Story (and present too) from grassroots. Thank you for your interests churchofruss.

  • Hi churchofruss. He was in Arezzo during ww II? I recently add this video to document those days. Who have any stories to tell about that tragedy is welcome :)

    Ciao!

  • yes, my whole family was in monte san savino & arezzo up until 1950's when they moved to the us,i'm the 1st generation born here.i remember always hearing stories as a child about this & seeing video & pictures of it was exactly like how my nonno described it.i never knew the severity of it until now.i knew it was horrible, but both of my grandparents had so many horrible experiences it seemed at the time to me another every day thing they had to deal with until the allies came in 1944.

  • my nonno who recently passed away was the oldest living survivor til that point
