LCARS - Linux Can Also Run Starships
-
Comparing an iPhone and an Internet Tablet is like comparing a games console and a PC: one is a locked-down device with a very limited range of functions, while the other lets the user do pretty much whatever they want.
The fact that LCARS47 made an Internet Tablet look and sound like a working prop from Star Trek shows just how flexible the device is.

This is very cool! Hopefully someone will make LCARS a GUI for gen use for PCs, PDAs and PADDs.

I want it for iPad

@iodyn It'd be tough to make a decent LCARS theme on top of the iPad's UI layout, and Apple doesn't support themes anyway. I think you'd have to jailbreak to do anything like this. Someone could make a standalone LCARS app rather than trying to theme the built-in UI, but I'd bet Apple would reject such an app if it came from anyone other than CBS. Why buy Apple's needlessly crippled products (and void your warranty to make them do what you want) when non-crippled products are already available?

@mquiroz90 It's a Nokia 770 like the title says, released in late 2005. I also did LCARS and other themes for the Nokia N800 and N810 tablets, and a somewhat Trek-ish theme called Okuda for the N900 smartphone.

The theme and sounds packages are for Maemo 4, aka Internet Tablet OS2008. The Maemo SDK runs on Linux, but Nokia provides VMware and VirtualBox images so it can be used on Mac OS X and Windows. Of course, Maemo (and the LCARS themes) run at 800x480 and are designed for touchscreens, so using them on a PC probably won't be that interesting unless you're considering developing software for the platform.
