Focus on learning how to steer with the rear wheel before attempting wheelies.

Instead of doing those long, slow U-turns; just blip the throttle and grab some front brake as you lean the bike over. This will slide the back end out... do it right and you will be facing in the opposite direction.

Wheelies are cool but unnecessary... first, learn how to ride with both wheels on the ground and concentrate on becoming a faster rider.

Besides, sliding around is a LOT more fun than doing wheelies.
