However, most experts agree that the 2006 class was one of the deepest in recent memory and Barbaro toyed with them at the Derby, winning by 8 lengths without Prado using the whip? Awesome.
I like to think he would have held of Bernardini in the Preakness. I am confident he would have been right there in the Belmont (many people forget Barbaro was so eager and energized after finishing the Derby he wouldn't slow down and opened a 20 length lead in the gallop out).
It's so hard to never know...

Who knows. Barbaro was a terrific horse. Bernardini. was a very good horse. Hard to tell how Barbaro would have faired.

In my opinion, Spectacular Bid (1979) and Smarty Jones (2004) were the best not to win the Triple Crown after winning the first two races... you can make a great case with Alysheba (1987) as well .... Real Quiet (1998) came the closest but wasn't the best horse of this group...
